More games to play
Crossword is a free browser word puzzle that flips the usual format: there are no clues. Instead you get a partially filled grid and a set of letters to work with. Tap a letter tile and every cell in the grid that uses that same letter fills in at once. It runs in the browser on desktop and mobile, no download or account needed. Five difficulty levels keep it from going stale. Easier puzzles give you more letters pre-placed on the board; harder ones strip those away and leave you to work things out with fewer anchors.
What is Crossword?
Crossword is a word puzzle game in the word / brain category, rated 4.3 out of 5 from 838 players. The core loop is straightforward: you see a crossword grid, some letters are already placed, and you have a pool of letters to fill the rest. The twist is that there are no across or down clues. You are working purely from the letter pattern on the board and the way tiles interact with each other.
Selecting tiles and letters
All interaction in Crossword comes down to a single action: tap or click a letter to place it. The game handles the rest automatically.
| Action | Desktop | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Select a letter tile | Left mouse button click | Tap the tile |
| Auto-fill same letter | Happens automatically | Happens automatically |
Difficulty levels
There are five difficulty settings. The main thing that changes between them is how many letters start pre-placed on the grid. Lower difficulties give you more anchor letters so the logic chain is shorter. Higher difficulties leave the grid almost empty, which means each letter choice has bigger knock-on effects.
| Level | What changes |
|---|---|
| 1 (easiest) | Many letters already on the board |
| 2 | Fewer pre-placed letters |
| 3 | Moderate starting letters |
| 4 | Sparse starting letters |
| 5 (hardest) | Minimal letters pre-placed, most to figure out |
Tips for working through harder grids
- Start with letters that appear only once in the grid. If a letter has just one slot, placing it is risk-free.
- Use the auto-fill mechanic to your advantage: tapping a common letter like E or A will reveal a lot of the grid at once, which can confirm or eliminate other choices.
- On harder levels, look for short crossing words first. A two-letter intersection narrows down options quickly.
- If a placement fills too many cells with a letter that does not fit anywhere else, undo and try a different tile.
